The Keep It Green tipper parked on a residential street in Plymouth, ready to load

Plenty of firms round here say “Devon and Cornwall” and leave it at that. It sounds generous and it tells you nothing — you still do not know whether they will actually come out to you.

So here is the honest version: twelve towns, all inside a sensible run from Plymouth with a tipper. Anywhere on this list we will quote without hesitating. Anywhere near the edge of it, ring and ask — the answer is often yes, especially for a bigger job, but we would rather say so up front than take a booking we cannot do properly.

Devon

Plymouth

Home patch

Plymouth is where most of our work is, from the terraces around Stoke and Peverell to the newer estates out at Derriford and Southway. A lot of the city sits on a slope, so front gardens are stepped and awkward to mow and back gardens are often walled and narrow — we bring kit that suits that rather than a machine that can only handle a flat lawn. Green waste goes to Chelson Meadow and you get the waste transfer note.

Plympton

About 5 miles east

Plympton splits between the older cottages around St Maurice and the big post-war estates at Chaddlewood, Woodford and Colebrook. The estate gardens tend to be generous rectangles with a long boundary hedge on at least one side, which is exactly the sort of hedge that gets away from people over a couple of summers. It is a short run back to the tip from here, which keeps clearance jobs straightforward.

Plymstock

About 4 miles south-east

Plymstock, Elburton and Oreston are full of 1960s and 70s semis with mature shrub borders that were planted small and are now considerably bigger than anyone intended. Being close to the Plym and the coast, gardens down here green over fast — patios and paths take on moss and algae quickly, which is why a lot of the jet washing we do is on this side of the water.

Ivybridge

About 11 miles east

Ivybridge sits right on the southern edge of Dartmoor, and gardens on the upper side of town catch the weather coming off the moor. Growth is quick and wet here, so hedges and lawns need cutting more often than people expect, and clearance jobs usually mean brambles and self-seeded sycamore as much as grass. Worth booking a run of visits rather than a one-off if your garden backs onto open ground.

South Brent

About 16 miles east

South Brent is the furthest east we go, and it is genuinely rural — hedgebanks rather than fence panels, longer plots, and a fair bit of it under trees. Jobs out this way tend to be bigger and less frequent, so we normally quote them as a full clearance or a seasonal cut back rather than a fortnightly mow.

Wembury

About 8 miles south-east

Wembury and Down Thomas are coastal, and it shows in the gardens: salt-burnt hedging, wind-shaped shrubs and a lot of escallonia and griselinia that needs regular shaping to stay dense. Sheds, fences and decking take a battering down here too, so pressure washing is often part of the same visit.

Tavistock

About 15 miles north

Tavistock is a run up the A386 past Yelverton, and the gardens are a real mix — Victorian town plots with high stone walls and long, deep gardens on the outskirts. The older walled gardens often have ivy that has been left for years and has got into the mortar, which is a job in itself before anything else can happen.

Yelverton

About 10 miles north

Yelverton, Dousland and Horrabridge sit on the western edge of Dartmoor, so gardens here are bigger, greener and wetter than anything in the city. Beech and laurel hedges are common and they put on serious growth in a season. Moorland-edge plots also mean more leaf and branch waste, so bring the tipper rather than a trailer.

Cornwall

Saltash

About 5 miles west

Straight over the Tamar Bridge, Saltash is close enough that we treat it much like Plymouth for booking. The town runs steeply down to the waterside, so a lot of gardens are terraced with retaining walls and steps, and getting cleared waste back up to the road is usually the hard part of the job rather than the cutting.

Torpoint

About 9 miles south-west

Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula are a ferry hop or a longer drive round, so we tend to group jobs on this side into the same day where we can. Gardens here are exposed and coastal, with a lot of hedging planted for shelter that needs cutting on both faces to stay useful.

Callington

About 13 miles north-west

Callington and the villages around Kelly Bray are properly rural, with bigger plots, Cornish hedgebanks and a lot of established trees. Work out here is usually a full clearance or tree and hedge reduction rather than a regular mow — and because it is a longer run, we will normally quote it as one visit that gets everything done.

Liskeard

About 18 miles west

Liskeard is the western edge of what we cover. It is a solid run down the A38, so we take jobs here when they are worth the trip — a full garden clearance, a hedge removal, or a waste load — rather than a half-hour grass cut. Tell us what you have got and we will be straight with you about whether we are the right people for it.

Not on the list?

Ring anyway. If it is a decent-sized job we will often travel further, and if we cannot help we will say so rather than string you along. Two minutes on the phone saves everybody a wasted week.
