From a tidy-up to taking it out completely

Hedges are the thing that creeps up on people. A hedge that was chest height when it went in is over the windows five years later, and the garden behind it has gone dark. Then cutting it back means going further than a trim.

We do the full range: routine cutting and shaping to keep a hedge dense, hard reductions on hedges that have simply got too big, and full removal where the hedge has had its day.

The light is usually the point

Customers ask for hedge work because the hedge is untidy. What they actually notice afterwards is the light. Taking two or three feet off the top of a boundary hedge changes the whole feel of a garden — and taking one out entirely can give you back a view you had forgotten was there.

Nesting season, honestly handled

Between March and August we check a hedge for active nests before anything starts. If there is one, the work waits. It is the law, and it is also just the right way to do it. Outside that window there is nothing to hold the job up.

Conifers and leylandii — what to expect

Leylandii, cypress and most conifers will not reshoot from brown wood. Cut into the bare centre and it stays bare. So there is a real decision to make: reduce it to the last of the green and keep a hedge, or take it out and replace it with something else — or with fencing. We will tell you which we would do before you commit, not after.

Waste is included

Hedge work generates more material than any other garden job we do. All of it goes with us, and it is disposed of at a licensed site.

Questions people ask

Do you cut leylandii back hard?

Yes — and it is one of the most common jobs we get. The one thing to know is that conifers do not reshoot from brown wood, so once you cut into the bare interior it stays bare. We will always tell you before we cut how far back it can go and still green up, and how far back it can go if you just want it gone.

When is the best time to have a hedge cut?

For most garden hedges, late summer through to early spring. Between March and August is bird nesting season, which is why we check a hedge before we start — it is an offence to damage an active nest, and we will not do it. Off-season work can usually still go ahead once the hedge has been checked.

Can you take a hedge out completely?

Yes. We cut it down, clear the growth, and take the stumps out or grind them depending on what is going in afterwards. It is a popular job before new fencing goes up, and it usually opens up far more light and space than people expect.

Do you clear up afterwards?

Every time. Hedge work produces a startling amount of material, and it all goes on the tipper. The area is left swept and ready for whatever comes next, whether that is planting, fencing or nothing at all.

My hedge is on a boundary. Whose is it?

If it is genuinely on the line, it is worth a word with the neighbour before we cut the far side — most are pleased someone is dealing with it. You are entitled to cut anything overhanging your side back to the boundary. We will work to whatever you have agreed.

How tall can you work?

We work off the ground and off ladders and platforms for normal domestic hedges. Anything that has grown into genuine tree height gets quoted as tree work rather than hedge work.
