Trees that have got too big for the garden

Most tree work in a domestic garden comes down to one of three things. A tree that was planted too close to the house and is now touching the roof. A tree that seeded itself, was left, and is now shading half the garden. Or a tree that has died, split or lost a limb and needs dealing with before it does damage.

We handle all three at garden scale — felling, reducing, thinning and cutting back — and we take the timber with us.

Reduce first, fell second

If cutting a tree back will fix the problem, that is what we will recommend. Reducing the crown, thinning it out or lifting the lower branches often gives back the light or the clearance you needed, and you keep the tree. Felling is the answer when the tree is dead, dangerous, in the wrong place entirely, or too big for where it is standing.

Stumps

Once a tree is down you are left with a stump, and what to do with it depends entirely on what the ground is for. Laying a lawn, paving or putting in fence posts means it has to come out. At the back of a border, it can usually stay. We will give you the price both ways so you can decide.

Cleared, not just cut

The part people notice is what is left behind. Timber cut down and loaded, brash chipped or bagged, the ground raked over and swept. No log pile, no heap of branches, nothing for you to arrange afterwards.

Before you book: TPOs and conservation areas

If a tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or your property sits in a conservation area, you need council consent before work starts — and the responsibility for that sits with you as the owner. It is a straightforward check with Plymouth City Council, or with Cornwall Council over the bridge. If a tree looks like it might be protected we will say so before we quote.

What a customer said

Keep it Green Garden and Waste Services did an incredible job on our garden! Based on the reviews I knew they’d be good but they have exceeded expectations! They had had their work cut out with our garden with overgrown grass, dangling trees, weeds and ivy and the weather was not on their side but they still managed an amazing job on our garden. Very reasonable and you can tell they take pride in their job as they took their time and care to make sure we were happy before leaving. Would 100% recommend to anybody.

Questions people ask

How big a tree will you take on?

Garden-scale trees — the ones that were planted too close to the house, or seeded themselves and have been left. Genuinely large or complex trees, anything overhanging a road, and any work needing climbing and rigging is a job for a qualified arborist, and we will say so rather than take it on.

Do I need permission to cut down a tree?

Sometimes. If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order on it, or your property is in a conservation area, you need to go to Plymouth City Council (or your own council) first. It is a quick check and worth doing — it is your responsibility as the owner. We will flag it if we think a tree looks like it might be protected.

What happens to the stump?

It can be ground out, dug out, or left, depending on what you want the ground for. If you are laying a lawn, paving or putting up a fence, get it out. If it is at the back of a border, leaving it is usually fine and cheaper.

Do you take the wood away?

Yes. Timber, brash, the lot. If you want the logs kept for a wood burner we will cut them to length and stack them instead — just say when we quote. Otherwise it goes on the tipper.

Can you just cut back the branches rather than fell it?

Very often that is the better answer. Reducing the crown, thinning it or lifting the lower branches can solve the light problem or the overhanging problem without losing the tree. We would always rather reduce than fell if reducing does the job.

Are you insured?

Yes, we carry public liability insurance. Ask us for the details when we quote and we will send them over.
